Anchoring ourselves in prayer

In our tradition, we are encouraged to have regular times of prayer throughout the day – morning, noon, early evening and late evening. Our prayer book (Book of Common Prayer – BCP) offers prayers for all of these times of they day. They can be a lifeline especially when the prayers we say on our own run out of steam. Also in our tradition is choice – choice to use one, some or all of these. Below are some options for use as individuals and as families.  As a family, don’t be afraid to invite those who live with you into prayer at this time.  In this time of a pandemic, we need to pray together.

Daily devotions for families and individuals (BCP starting on page 137)

These are short prayers for morning, noonday, early evening and at the close of the day. Choose one or two to anchor your day.  Maybe use the prayer as you get started with your day as a family or make your breakfast. Maybe use the close at the end of the day before you go to sleep.

These prayers are available here in a flyer.

Morning and Evening Prayer (BCP starting on page 75)

A prayer structure with psalm, scripture and prayer. These prayers are in the Book of Common prayer and can seem complicated, but there are many online options which make it easy to use or even listen to. If you are doing it on your own, you can shorten as desired- one psalm, one reading and choose one of more of the prayers. Online options follow.

Compline (BCP starting on page 127)

A short prayer service said at the end of the day.  So many families have told me how powerful it is when they say Compline together at the end of the day.  These days some are doing it over zoom with friends and family members and I have heard that young people of 8 and 10 are leading Compline online.

Contact Rev. Anne-Marie if you would like her to teach you or your family how to lead it via zoom.
